Terms Explained

Flash™
Is compiled content (ie. it doesn't require your browser to interpret any code). Instead  your browser requires a 'Flash Player' plug-in to run it. It can be used to create content that is visually superb, but is often overused (see main section to revealing how & weaknesses).

Javascript
Javascript is a programming language and is not compiled - ie. It code is interpreted by you browser. Javascript was engineered with the intention of creating a method of dynamically manipulating webpages without the need for refreshing the page.

Browser
This is the name given to the program that you use to view the internet. The most common examples are:

  • Firefox
  • Chrome
  • Safari
  • Opera
  • Internet Explorer
  • most modern phones will now also have a browser built in.

They can vary wildly in their abilities to interpret code and how they display what they are capable of interpreting.

A test can be found in the sidebar of the homepage, and some good browsers can be downloaded for free from our 'Downloads' page.

SEO

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is the process of improving the visibility of a website in search engines via the "natural" or un-paid search results. In general, higher ranked on the search results page(the the earlier it appears), and more frequently a site appears in the search results list, the more visitors it will receive from the search engine's users.

As an Internet marketing strategy, SEO considers how search engines work, what people search for and the actual search terms typed into search engines. Optimizing a website may involve editing its content and coding to both increase its relevance to specific keywords and to remove barriers to the indexing activities of search engines.

Promoting a site to increase the number of backlinks (or inbound links) is another SEO tactic, but this strategy should be used sparingly as there is a possibility that very sharp increases in would cause the search engine to assume you were just buying links and penalise for this.
